A bearer both of Gnawa tradition and of its fusion with Western instruments, Grooz is a group that delivers the secrets of a renewed trance. Led brilliantly by its singer and guitarist Abdelhak Benmedjebari, whose solid stage experience is due to his many performances with his father, the “Maalem Mejbar” and his uncles of the “Gaada Diwan Béchar,” Grooz offers a dynamic show with reggae, blues, rock and jazz beats grafted to the traditional repertory. An ancestral culture celebrated with a forceful modernity!

Grooz needed original artwork and graphic design for his new album. For this particular project, we were given "carte blanche", apart from a few guidelines. Like all free rein endeavours, it is exciting and tricky at the same time. With the pre-mastered album at our disposal, we took on to rendering the music into illustration.
In his album entitled "East West", Grooz blends traditional Sub-Saharan music with modern funk, jazz and soul. We wanted the cover to tell the story of Grooz' travel from Algiers to Montreal.
